Shotbox Late Night Saturday 12/19

December 19th, 2009

For tonight’s late night hours at ShotBox Ty asked for something laden with alcohol. We respond with the following cupped cake: Chocolate cake filled with chocolate Bailey’s buttercream topped with a vodka and coffee liqueur chocolate ganache buttercream. There is so much alcohol in this cake that you will need a cup of the best single origin coffee or a double shot of espresso to sober up enough for you to drive home.  This is the most alcohol we’ve put into anything yet.

If you want to experience the fun, Shotbox will be open from 10pm-2am. Supplies are limited. Enjoy the performance while it lasts.

Shotbox is located at 323 W. Martin Street in downtown Raleigh, NC.

Independent Weekly article

December 16th, 2009

This week Crumb and ShotBox got a great mention in the Independent Weekly. The article is quoted below:

“Cups of cake” at new Shotbox

16 DEC 2009 •  by Victoria Bouloubasis

Life imitates art, right? Inspired by performance art, a trifecta of Raleigh foodies has unveiled an art exhibit turned cupcake and coffee bar that entices frigid palates with take-away sweet treats and coffee. Shotbox (323 W. Martin St., www.shotboxraleigh.com) is nestled in the front of the Designbox gallery, giving the Warehouse District a sweet smidgen of what is to come. Shotbox is only slated to be around for the month of December, but it may manifest into Crumb and Coffee, a combination of bakers Carrie Gephart (formerly of Hayes Barton Cafe and Dessertery) and David Menestres, who represent Crumb (www.justcrumb.com), with the help of coffee gurus Ty Beddingfield (original owner of Third Place Coffeehouse) and Rich Futrell (of Durham’s Counter Culture).

Right now, downtown revelers can enjoy “cups of cake” (”The stuff we’re producing is way beyond cupcakes,” says Beddingfield) in extraordinary flavors spiked with ingenuity. A recent post on justcrumb.com/blog unveiled the Little Lebowski Urban Achiever (chocolate cake filled with a vodka/ coffee ganache, topped with a buttercream made with vodka and coffee liquor, $6) and the Ubersuperduper (candied orange, white chocolate ganache, orange cake, chocolate ganache filling, $8), which the blog says is “large enough for two people who like each other enough to share.” Set in just 100 square feet of space, Shotbox squeezes in a few other items, such as brownies and cookies, and the coffee bar features artfully prepared single-origin coffee drinks. There’s also a hot drinking chocolate on the menu; Paul Mosca of Raleigh’s Chocolate Seed (www.nahuallitrading.com) grinds cocoa beans for at least four hours in a granite grinder to achieve the perfect flavor and consistency.

Menestres touts Shotbox as “certainly a work of art.” And it’s been interpreted, like art, all sorts of ways. Beddingfield describes it as an experiment that people should come in and see for themselves. “Some might see it as fun, some as pretentious. Some see it as ridiculous, and some love it.” Shotbox is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. now through Dec. 23, pending a possible new schedule.

Grace, the daughter of @dgtlpapercuts, reviews hot chocolate from Shotbox with vegetarian marshmallow by Crumb and one of our cups of cake, a chocolate cake with caramel filling, ganache, and French sea salt.  This girl has a future in the review business.  Someone call Frank Bruni at the New York Times and tell him we found his replacement. http://idek.net/l12

Shotbox: Opening Night

December 7th, 2009

Friday December 4 was the grand opening of Shotbox in conjunction with the opening of Brand Fandango 8 at DesignBox.  Crowds were estimated by Ty to be in the neighborhood of 500. Crumb was there watching all the people and slinging cupcakes as fast as people could eat them.

A few photos from the evening:

Thanks to everyone that came out. The performance continues at ShotBox weekday mornings from 7am-9am and most of the rest of the day as well.  Go find Ty and tell him to make you something tasty, like a chocolito!  Saturdays will be special at ShotBox, make sure to come and see. Shotbox Featuring Crumb Opening at Designbox Friday

November 30th, 2009

Crumb and Coffee is indeed coming to downtown. The location will be in the front office space of Designbox and the opening date is this coming Friday evening.

Starting on Friday December 4th, the front gallery space of Designbox will be transformed into Brand Fandango #8 and Shotbox. Brand Fandango will, like every year, showcase local brands and talent for the holiday season. This year, the addition of coffee and dessert will definitely add a bit more warmth in the cold.

While the front gallery becomes Brand Fandango, the front office is converted into a take-away coffee and cake stand, serving the gallery and street. Locals will be able to come into Designbox and buy a coffee while perusing the gifts OR simply pop by the to-go window on the street for their caffeine and cake fix.

Shotbox will have extended hours on Friday and Saturdays nights for the warehouse district nightlife and starting Monday Dec. 7, morning hours to help downtown get to work. Look for take out served right to the street. Just another reason that the Warehouse District is the future of Downtown Raleigh.

Special Shotbox Hours
7am – 9am (goodmorning coffee)
10pm – 2am (goodnight cupcake)
