June 11th, 2010

Crumb will be at the Big Boss brewery tour on Saturday June 12 selling slices of cake.

-Pound cake (made with Hell’s Belle) with lemon curd, blackberries, and raspberries

-The Big Operator: alternating layers of chocolate and yellow cake (made with Big Operator) with a chocolate espresso buttercream

The brewery is located at 1249 Wicker Drive Raleigh, NC. The tour is 2-3pm. Crumb will be there till 4pm or until we sell out. Then you’ll be able to find us drinking at the bar.

Sunday June 13 we’ll be at RebusFest! Come out for the music, food, and art. Festivites don’t begin till noon so you have plenty of time to sleep off that hangover! This is a great opportunity to check out the excellent art by Luke Buchanan.

We will be serving:

-Brownies! (remember those from the Handmade market??)

-big chocolate chip cookies!

-Devitos (mini chocolate cups of cake) topped with the very special GHOST CHILE GANACHE!

Farm to Fork wrap up

May 24th, 2010

Farm to Fork is pretty much the coolest thing ever. How cool? The only phrase that comes close to describing the awesomeness is: fucking badass! How badass? Like Shaft and Superfly rolled into one. Those who were there know what were talking about. Those that weren’t should make plans now to attend next year.

We finally got to try some Fullsteam. The Pasternaak Parsnip Ale and Carver’s Sweet Potato Ale were both excellent. The strawberry Sangria from 18 Seaboard was very refreshing after cutting cakes for two and a half hours. The strawberry gazpacho with cucumber and basil from Herons at the Umstead was a great twist on a classic dish. Our favorite food was from Fired Flour, tasty and unique pizza, cooked on the spot, with ingredients such as fig preserves, goat cheese, mustard, onion marmalade, nuts, and so much more (not all together of course). Keep an eye out for these guys.  The list of delicious food could just keep going on and on and on and on and on…….

Crumb’s menu for Farm to Fork

May 21st, 2010

Crumb is very pleased to be taking part in this year’s Farm to Fork celebration of local foods and local farms.  For those going, this is what you are getting from us. For those not going, this is what you are missing out on.

We are doing three different types of cake:

1] An untitled cake featuring chocolate from Escazu Artisan Chocolate (Raleigh, NC), beer from Big Boss (Raleigh, NC), and goat cheese and yogurt from Celebrity Dairy (Siler City, NC)

2] Strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream featuring strawberries from Barefoot Farms (Meadow, NC)

3] Sweet Potato cake with brown sugar/bourbon buttercream featuring Beauregard Sweet Potatoes from L & G Farms (Meadow, NC)

All cakes use flour from Lindley Mills (Graham, NC), cream and buttermilk from Maple View Farm (Hillsborough, NC), and eggs from Latta’s Egg Ranch (Hillsborough, NC)

Thanks to Escazu, Big Boss, and Celebrity Dairy for donating ingredients.

As a side note, this is the last weekend to buy strawberries from Barefoot farms at the Raleigh Farmer’s Market. Go and get some, they are the perfect strawberry: red to the core, tart, and sweet without being sugary.

Pictures will be posted on Monday.

Winner of the #NameThatCake contest!

May 7th, 2010

We had a great response to the #NameThatCake contest. Thanks to everyone that took part.

In the end, we decided to combine our two favorite suggestions into one. The madness that is the coconut milk cake, red curry caramel, and mango buttercream will henceforth be known as Phuket Bill.  Mad thanks to the winners, Katie Knight (@knightlibrarian) and Brad from Big Boss (@BigBossbeer). You can both claim your prize, your very own Phuket Bill, tonight at Rebus Works.

The Phuket Bill will be available tonight in a beta release at Rebus Works along with an awesome Strawberry cake (gluten free) filled with Strawberries and topped with a strawberry buttercream. Sale starts at 6pm and runs until 10, or until we sell out.

As always, all of Crumbs tasty treats are baked using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible including fresh NC strawberries, flour, dairy, and eggs.

Rebus Works is located at 301-2 Kinsey Street Raleigh, NC  27603

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Music Raleigh to Present Steve Reich’s Different Trains
April 6, 2010 (Raleigh, NC) — On April 27th, New Music Raleigh, a brand new performing arts
group, will return to Meymandi Theater at the Murphey School for a performance of  Pulitzer
Prize winning composer Steve Reich’s Different Trains.  The program will also feature the world
premiere of Lick by Brett William Dietz and Trilogy by Dave Maric.  The concert begins at
7:30pm and tickets will be available at the door for $10.00.
New Music Raleigh is a collective of the area’s most dynamic classical musicians, dedicated to
performing the works of living composers. By presenting this living music in unique venues and
through collaboration with other artists, NMR offers a fresh musical perspective to Raleigh by
providing captiviating yet casual concerts in which the audience and performers are connected.  In
its first year of existence, NMR has proven to be one of Raleigh’s most forward-thinking arts
organizations, performing with indy rock band Lost in the Trees in addition to giving modern
edgy composition a voice in the city. New Music Raleigh’s upcoming projects will feature more
cross-genre collaboration, intimate audience experiences, and exceptional musical performances.
Steve Reich was recently called  “our greatest living composer” (The New York Times),
“America’s greatest living composer.” (The Village VOICE), “…the most original musical thinker
of our time” (The NewYorker) and “…among the great composers of the century” (The New
York Times).. From his early taped speech pieces It’s Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966)
to his and video artist Beryl Korot’s digital video opera Three Tales (2002), Mr. Reich’s path has
embraced not only aspects of Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and
rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz. “There’s just a
handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical
history and Steve Reich is one of them,” states The Guardian (London).
In April 2009 Steve Reich was awarded the Pulitzer prize in Music for his composition ‘Double
Sextet’.
